B Corp, what?
Y'all know by now that I'm very into taking care of my body. I mean, I don't always pick the best food choice (I sure do love Almond Joys), but I do make a conscious effort to be aware of not only what I put in my body but also what I put on my body. This is why I love Beautycounter so much. Their commitment to providing safer alternatives to skincare and beauty as well as their transparency in their ingredient selection process hits the ball out of the park for me. And just when I thought they couldn't get any better, they did it again. Did you know that there's only a little over 2,000 certified B Corporations worldwide and that Beautycounter is one of them?! Shut the front door. That's right. And not only did Beautycounter re-certify as a B Corp this year, but their rating also jumped up from an 81 to a 95. That's what I'm talking about!
But if you're anything like me, when I first started on this "switch to safer" journey, I had no idea what a B Corporation was, so let me fill you in. According to the official website, B Corps are "for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency." Companies that want to qualify as a B Corp must consider the entire company in making sure it incorporates people and planet in all decision making, to include: how transparent is the company both with clients and with their supply chain, what's the companies dedication to protecting consumers, what's the sustainability, and how does the company treat their employees (i.e., maternity and paternity leave options to name a few). That's a pretty tall order if you ask me. But Beautycounter did it! They're commitment to safer products, sustainability, charitable giving, advocacy, and transparency has made all the difference. Because of their mission and their continuous accolades (like B Corp Cert), I'm proud to support and be a consultant for a company like Beautycounter. I know that they are making a positive impact on our society. I have a feeling, as more research develops, more companies will buy into the idea of switching to safer. And when that happens, we'll no longer have to scan and read every label for harmful ingredients. We'll be able to walk into a store, grab something off the shelf, and feel secure in knowing the product is safe. Oh man, what a day that will be. So thankful for Beautycounter in leading the way with this movement.
