Switch to Safer- My 'Why'

A childhood friend of mine runs a successful life and style blog called Holy City Chic and I had been following her blog's instagram posts for some time.  One day I saw a picture she posted of a face wash and moisturizer in beautiful packaging and decided to click the link in her profile to read more about it.  It was here that I discovered the name Beautycounter and began to learn more about both the company and the products they sold.

A little backstory... For as long as I can remember I have struggled with acne prone skin.  The teen years were full of frequent breakouts, prescription face washes and creams, and finding the right concealer to hide it all.  By college I seemed to keep most breakouts at bay, but truly, it seemed to be a constant battle.  The only thing that was actually "working" for me was the concealer and foundation I had found to camouflage all the imperfections.  By graduate school I had gotten tired of trying all the different types of prescriptions, and as a soon-to-be speech-language pathologist, I knew I would have countless people looking at my face.  I wanted to be confident in the therapy I was providing instead of worrying about what a patient might think of my face.  So I decided to make another appointment with my dermatologist.  The course of action we decided on was accutane since we had literally tried almost everything else by this point.  While this did in fact help my skin clear up immensely, I truly do wish I had never done it (and found Beautycounter first instead).  I'm convinced this medicine compromised my immune system in countless ways (a story for another day).  And you know what? While my skin was a little more consistently clear, it certainly wasn't always breakout-free. Needless to say, I was still keeping my eye out for products with good reviews, especially products recommended by people I trusted and, to me, looked to have pretty clear skin themselves.

You can imagine then, why I would have clicked on the link to learn more about Beautycounter.  What I found resonated with me more than I could explain.  Not only did the products receive an amazing product review, but their mission was one I could easily stand behind.  What is their mission?  To get safer products into the hands of everyone.  Yes, that's right, safer.  Beautycounter has a strict ingredient selection process, in fact it's one of the most strict in the industry banning over 1,400 ingredients through a five step process (learn more about that process by clicking here).  By the time I got done reading all of the information I was sold and excited.  The mission alone was inspiring.  I followed her link to the official Beautycounter website and read even more.  Over the next several days I kept reading and learning more until I felt comfortable enough to try some products.  I decided on switching my face wash and moisturizer first.  I loved it so much that each month I switched one of my former products for a Beautycounter replacement.  After a couple months I was using the whole Nourishing line and loving the results!  I loved them so much, that by that fall I became a consultant.  Almost two years later and I have the best skin I've ever had and often even go without foundation at all! On this page I'll continue to post more about my journey with Beautycounter and all the ins and outs of our grassroots mission.
